Sex and Wine in the Islamic Golden Age.
A talk delivered 23-11-2019, by Eleanor Barker and Samuel Claussen, as part of the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research program.
The paper examines the literature of the Islamic Golden Age, including poetry, fiction, and belles-lettres. Moreover, it analyzes various understandings of sexuality and intoxication depicted in literature amongst the subcultures of the royal court, political elite, and religious minorities. This paper specifically looks at Rudaki’s “Rubaiyat,” Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, Nizamu’l al Mulk’s Treatise on the Art of Government, ibn Iskandar’s Qabus Nama, Sa’di’s Gulistan, and the poetry of Abu Nuwas and Hafiz.
